The Rame Peninsula or "The Forgotten Corner of Cornwall" as it is known locally is just across the border with Devon surrounded on three sides by water, the Rivers Lynher, Tamar and Plymouth Sound. The entire area of the Rame peninsula is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Mount Edgcumbe Country Park (on the doorstep of Bay Cottage) is a 885 acres Country Park situated on the Rame Peninsula. The Park has been famous since the 18th century, when the Edgcumbe family created formal gardens around the Tudor House. The South West Coast Path runs through the Park for nine miles along the coastline then onto Whitsand Bay.
The Park also contains the villages of Kingsand and Cawsand as well as Mount Edgcumbe House itself. The Formal Gardens grouped in the lower park near Cremyll include an Orangery (serving food, drinks and ice creams), an Italian Garden, a French Garden, an English Garden and a Jubilee Garden, which opened in 2002, to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The Park and Formal Gardens are open all year round and admission is free.
From Cremyll you can catch the pedestrian ferry across to Plymouth, the barbican with National Marine Aquarium and also to the iconic Royal William Yard which boasts many fantastic places to dine including the River Cottage Canteen, Le Bistro Pierre and WagaMama's to name just a few!
Just up the road from Bay Cottage is Whitsand Bay which runs from Rame Head in the east to Portwrinkle in the west. It is characterised by sheer, high cliffs, dramatic scenery and long stretches of beautiful sandy beaches, great for swimming and surfing or relaxing! The South West Coast Path runs the length of the bay.
Other attractions such as The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Dartmoor National Park are all a short drive away.
