The Geese and Fountain
The Geese and Fountain is a traditional welcoming village pub in the lovely Leicestershire village of Croxton Kerrial, about five miles west of Grantham and the A1, and nine miles east of Melton Mowbray.
This recently re-opened village inn has two wood fires, and a quiet and welcoming atmosphere. There is no juke box or fruit machine, but occasional folk nights supplement the hum of conversation. Dogs, children, cyclists and walkers are all very welcome.
There are no permanent beers, but at least one of six local breweries always feature (Oldershaws, Belvoir, Brewsters, Oakham Ales, Grainstore and Nobby’s), together with a number of guest beers from other local microbreweries. There are 5 handpumps.
In addition to five handpulls of local real ale, the Geese and Fountain offers locally brewed lagers (currently Brewsters Helles and Nobby’s Pilsner) in addition to Freedom Four, three kegs of local craft beer (currently Oakham Ales Astaroth, Green Devil and The Kraken’s Ink) and three real ciders (currently Nottingham Blue Barrel and Hallaton Bottle Kicking Scrummage and Scrambler).
The pub serves breakfast (7.30am until 9.00am) and lunch (midday until 2.30pm) seven days a week (including a fixed price Sunday lunch offering a choice of locally reared meats or vegetarian roasts with all the usual accompaniments and more for £14.50 for two courses or £18.50 for three). Wednesday to Saturday evening there is a dinner menu including bison burgers, fish pie, a selection of pizzas, and home-made ice cream created using cream from the Belvoir Ridge dairy just three miles from the pub. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings have a ‘bar snacks’ menu, offering pork pies, scotch eggs and duck fat chips.
There are seven en suite letting rooms for Bed & Breakfast, each with its own individual style. Perfectly situated for visitors to Melton, Grantham, Rutland Water, the Vale of Belvoir, Leicester or Nottingham, or travellers heading up or down the A1, the pub is an ideal destination for cyclists, walkers and bird-watchers.
