The Apple Loft

More private and peaceful than a hostel and much less effort than camping, The Apple Loft offers budget accommodation for those wishing to explore the Somerset Levels and Mendip Hills.

About

The Apple Loft is ideal for couples, families or small groups wanting inexpensive overnight accommodation in a pretty, very peaceful location. Single travellers are welcome too, of course. There’s one double and two single beds in a light and sunny carpeted room (but with restricted head room) and an adjoining toilet and washbasin. Kettle and toaster are provided. Outside there is a seating area with a barbeque and a boot room with another toilet and a shower. The washing machine can be used for a small extra charge and the freezer has loads of freezer blocks for use in the freezer box provided. Bikes can be stored under cover and will be secure here. To keep costs down (and because I detest ironing!) bed linen incurs a one-off extra charge of £5 per person. Towel only, £2. It is expected that most people will bring sleeping bags. Dogs by arrangement - please call to chat. Not suitable for very young children. Single occupancy £28 per night. Each extra person £10 per night up to five (two on double, one on camp bed). Weekly rates negotiable.

Cycling
The Somerset Levels are excellent for cycling – quiet, easy, mostly level metalled roads or unmade droves with beautiful scenery and wildlife. Because there are few hedges, the visibility is good making them safer than many country lanes. For the more adventurous, the Cheddar and the Mendip Hills are only five miles away and offer fantastic mountain bike trails for the fit, fearless and/or foolhardy. From the Apple Loft, it is an easy cycle to Wells or Glastonbury on the pretty back roads. Sweets Café, just over the hill from here, is a favourite bikers’ food stop and The Sheppey Inn at Godney is an excellent destination for a short pub ride - live music on Fridays. A mile or so away, the famous (or infamous) Wilkins Cider Farm was a haunt of the late Jo Strummer. Sample the local tipple but beware, it’s strong stuff! The village of Wedmore is about two miles away. There are three pubs, a pizza place and a cafe - all a bit pricey, though.

Wildlife
The Levels have become famous for the starling murmurations in winter. Considered one the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles, millions of starlings gather at dawn and dusk and create stunning patterns in the air. But the Levels offer a huge variety of other wildlife too. If you’re up early enough, you could spot an otter. The rare bittern can sometimes be heard ‘booming’ in the reeds, and a huge variety of other waterfowl inhabit the pools. Ghostly barn owls and elegant Little Egrets are often seen here too.
